When Is The Best Time To Visit Noosa?

Nestled on the northern end of the Sunshine Coast in southeast Queensland, Noosa is renowned for its pristine beaches, rolling, green hinterland and lush, tropical rainforests. But perhaps Noosa’s biggest drawcard is its incredible subtropical climate that provides sunny days and mild temperatures year-round.

So, if you’re thinking about heading to Noosa for a holiday, let’s take a look at the best time to visit Noosa.

Summer (December - February)

Average temperatures 21°C – 29°C

During summer, you can expect warm, sunny days and balmy evenings. While the average temperature typically hangs around the high 20s, it’s not uncommon to experience temps in excess of 30°C.

Humidity is also at an all-time high during the summer months, which can make the temp feel a lot hotter than it actually is. The hot, humid conditions make for the perfect storm (literally). So, as the frequent afternoon thunderstorms roll through after a hot summer day, it helps to take the edge off the heat and humidity before you settle into bed for the evening.

It’s not just the air temperature that’s warm during the summer months. The ocean heats up at this time of year too. Averaging around 26°C, it’s ideal for swimming and water activities.

Summer is when Noosa truly shines. Not to mention, the glorious weather coincides with the longest school holidays of the year, so it’s not uncommon for tourists to flock to Noosa during the warmer months. With this in mind, it’s essential to be prepared. Book your accommodation early and lock in any reservations for restaurants to avoid disappointment.

Autumn (March - May)

Average temperatures 20°C – 23°C

Cooler than summer but still nice and warm, with autumn typically comes decreasing humidity and rainfall. The days are sunny and pleasant, and it's a great time for outdoor activities. Plus, you can also enjoy the Noosa Eat & Drink Festival, which usually takes place in May each year.

Of all the autumn months, March is known to be one of the most humid and wettest months of the year, so it’s worth keeping this in mind if you’re planning an autumn trip to Noosa. But as April and May roll around, rainfall starts to drop even though humid conditions persist.

During autumn, you can enjoy the outdoors without breaking a sweat. As the temperature and humidity drop, it’s much more pleasant for activities like hiking, walking along the beaches and exploring the national parks.

Rainfall also tends to decrease as the season progresses. That said, it’s not uncommon to experience some showers during early autumn, but they’re usually short-lived. By late autumn, you can expect dry, sunny conditions. And with the water sitting around 23°C to 25°C, it’s still the perfect temperature for a swim.

Winter (June - August)

Average temperatures 10°C – 21°C

Arguably the best time of year to visit Noosa, winters in Noosa are mild and dry, with cool mornings and evenings but warm, sunny days. It’s rarely ever too cold, and the rain is minimal at this time of year. All of this makes for a popular time for outdoor enthusiasts, thanks to the comfortable weather.

During the winter months, you can make the most of fewer crowds while still enjoying everything Noosa has to offer. Explore the Noosa National Park, enjoy the beach and sample some of Noosa’s best bars and restaurants. Sure, there might not be as many daylight hours compared to summer, but the warm, sunny days and mild evenings more than make up for it.

The winter months are a holiday favourite among many southerners, with holidaymakers from New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia making their way north to enjoy the warmer weather. There’s also often an influx of travellers from across the ditch looking to make the most of the blue skies and sunny days.

The water is certainly cooler but still swimmable, averaging around 21°C. Not to mention, winter is one of the best times of year to catch a glimpse of a humpback whale as they make their way north to breed. You might even be able to hear the whale song underwater as you take a dip at one of the many beaches Noosa has to boast.

And, if you’ve been thinking about tying the knot in Noosa, winter is the perfect time for a Noosa wedding.

Spring (September - November)

Average temperatures 14°C – 26°C

Spring is similar to autumn, with warming temperatures and low humidity. Rainfall starts to increase towards the end of spring, but overall, it's an excellent time for outdoor activities. It’s also the perfect time for beachgoers. The water starts to warm up, reaching 22°C to 24°C, and the sunny weather is ideal for sunbathing, swimming and surfing.

As the weather starts to warm up, nature comes alive as the flora starts to blossom and local wildlife welcome new babies. Springtime presents another opportunity to spot the humpbacks as they head back south with their calves.

The mornings and evenings are cooler, but the days are perfect for exploring or enjoying the beach. Or, if you really want to test your limits, you can take part in the world-renowned Noosa Triathlon. Taking place over five days, the Noosa Tri is just one of the many events held during this time. Also, keep an eye out for the Wyn Republic x Catalina Noosa Tri After-Party. The only way to rehydrate after your multisport efforts. And even if the tri isn’t for you, it’s just a fun time to visit — just make sure to book your accommodation early.

Ultimately, Noosa makes for an ideal holiday destination year-round. Whether you’re after a summer getaway or you’re looking to make the most of milder weather by the ocean, Noosa’s climate makes it an incredible destination for outdoor activities and culinary sensations year-round.
